First Day at Preschool
November 11, 2011 – 8:03 amAttending preschools starts the journey that will hopefully end with children graduating college. A little planning should help make this first step without stumbling.
Many preschools have a set schedule. Get a copy and use it to get snack and nap times synchronized ahead of time. One 3 year old can keep the class awake if he’s not ready to nap.
On the first day you will be taking in any supplies that are required for your child. Some items such as crayons and drawing paper will be on a list provided for you. If there’s a special doll or toy that your child needs to settle down for a nap make sure to include it, too. Put a label on everything so there’s no confusion.
Sometimes 3 year olds can have accidents, so pack a couple of diapers just in case. Potty training is still an on-going process in preschool.
Be sure that a list of food allergies or any other sensitive materials is given to the teacher. Often a list that’s on an entry application may be overlooked.
Some activities include circle time, snack time, free choice, group activities, outdoor play and cleanup. During circle time the teacher may read a story or start a conversation with the children about the weather or the seasons and how they relate to each other. This helps the children gain vocabulary.
Social skills are learned during group activities and cleanup time, when children work together to put away toys or clear the table. Group activities may include making up a story or learning a song.
Remember that your child will be playing outdoors, drinking juice and using crayons and finger paints. Make sure you send your child to preschool in clothing that is easy to clean and won’t wear out fast.
