Choosing the Right Senior Year Classes

February 9, 2012 – 12:34 am

That time of the year is here again registration! Everyone knows that choosing classes for your senior year of high school is of utmost importance. Let me tell you—senior year is not the time to slack off. Many students believe that senior year is the time to take it easy. Some students lose sight of their studies and it shows in their grades. You want to step up your game and take the classes that will make you stand out from the rest of your peers and work hard. Admissions offices will look at your grades during your senior year—first and second semester.

Take advantage of every opportunity you get. If honors or AP classes are offered for the courses you need to take and you think you can handle them, sign up! Colleges and universities will most definitely notice that you put in extra effort and really challenged yourself during your senior year. Personally, I would recommend taking at least five classes. Although most schools allow seniors to have a four-class schedule, I suggest taking five classes or having a full schedule. Tru

Arizona Lawmakers Target Bargaining Rights

February 6, 2012 – 10:45 pm

Arizona lawmakers are scheduled to begin debating a host of bills today that would, among other things, prohibit collective bargaining for public employees and make it even more difficult for unions to deduct money that could go towards lobbying, the Associated Press reports.

Arizona’s legislature is dominated by Republicans at the moment, so there’s a distinct possibility that the measures could pass. While not a required-bargaining state, Arizona school districts can choose to bargain collectively with unions if they want.

Last year, Ohio lawmakers passed a law to outlaw collective bargaining in the state. And Wisconsin Republicans pushed through a bill to limit teacher bargaining to wages, and even then all increases would need to be indexed to inflation. Both efforts faced massive resistance from unions, and the public: the Ohio measure was repealed in a ballot initiative, and Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin appears headed toward a recall election.

Elsewhere, AP reports, New Hampshire lawmakers are also considering doing away with collective bargaining and automatic dues deductions from workers’ paychecks.

Home Learning Benefits

February 6, 2012 – 3:49 pm

Home learning is the ideal option for those that wish to advance their skills, yet simply don’t have the time to attend an actual University course.

Despite learning from home the student will still be able to achieve an official degree. At Kaplan this degree is from an affiliate college of the University of Essex and allows the student to enjoy all of the benefits an actual land-based University course.

Home learning provides the student with a very flexible option when it comes to advancing further in their studies. Just because it offers an extremely flexible approach to learning this doesn’t, however, mean the student goes without help. There is still advice and answers available to those that take part in home learning in the form of online tutors, fellow students and course administrators. All of these options are readily available and will help you receive the most from your online home learning degree.

The online courses available also have multiple start dates, which allow the students to begin at a time that is convenient to them. Read more…

Best of the week (on the way)

January 20, 2012 – 3:18 am

Enjoy this video while Im working on an abbreviated weekly list of top performers. It really is a remarkable shot, even though he scored it on his own basket.

Gabe Vidal, Galt: The fifth-year post player rang up 29 points as the Ghosts downed the Huron Heights Huskies in an important triple-A matchup in the WCSSAA senior boys basketball league. The six-foot-two Vidal has been one of Galts most consistent players this season as they fight for one of three available berths at CWOSSA.

Jacob Whibbs, Monsignor Doyle: The Grade 10 centre has posted six points in his past three games, including two goals in a win over Bluevale, as the Mustangs have clinched a playoff spot in their first-ever season of WCSSAA boys hockey. Against Bluevale, he was one of only two centres available, meaning he played about half the game for Doyle.

Ryan Douse, WCI: The Grade 12 centre had a three-goal outing as the Vikings scored an 11-3 win over the St. David Celtics in WCSSAA boys hockey play.
