Shuh winners return to Waterloo

September 22, 2011 – 8:35 am

Need evidence of exactly how good the Waterloo County senior boys football league really is?

Look no farther than Saturdays OUA game at University Stadium where the past three Doug Shuh MVP Award winners will be playing a starting role for the visiting Western Mustangs against the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks.

And defensive back Beau Landry (Resurrection, 2008), wide receiver Andrew Thibaudeau (Cameron Heights, 2009) and running back Tyler Varga (Cameron Heights, 2010) arent the only locals suiting up for Western.

Defensive back Trevor Lass (Waterloo-Oxford), defensive tackle Brandon Murphy (Cameron Heights) and defensive end Alex Todd (Waterloo-Oxford) are also now calling London home.

The Golden Hawks have a massive WCSSAA contingent with defensive back Chris Ackie (Preston), receiver Karsten Beney (Bluevale), offensive lineman Gregory Borovilos (SJAM), receiver Scott Campbell (Galt), quarterback Jason Chris (Resurrection), linebacker Jesse Collins (Bluevale), quarterback James Fracas (SJAM), linebacker Drew Galpin (Forest Heights), kicker-punter Nathan Hawkes (Preston), receiver Dillon Heap (WCI), defensive lineman Mike Nagy (Resurrection), kicker-punter Ronnie Pfeffer (Cameron Heights), running back Josh Pirie (Jacob Hespeler), receiver Jordan Schulz (WCI), offensive lineman Drew Silverstein (KCI), offensive lineman Brent Wilson (WCI), and receiver Steve Woolner (Rockway).

A handful of interesting results from Thursdays WCSSAA games but none bigger — to me, at least — than Elmiras 49-12 win over Galt.

Join Education Nation and Helen Gym for a dialogue on “American Teacher”

September 21, 2011 – 8:11 pm

This afternoon at 4 p.m., I’ll be on a panel for Education Nation reviewing a new documentary “American Teacher” and discussing sustainability in the teaching profession. The documentary focuses on the struggles of four teachers across the country to remain in a profession which loses almost half its teachers within five years. Locally the numbers for Philadelphia are even more serious, where the PFT says that more than 50% leave by their fifth year.

Expect a strong discussion with folks like Newsweek pundit Jonathan Alter, the teachers featured in the documentary and myself.

The event streams live online at .

The Benefits of Online Education

September 5, 2011 – 12:14 pm

It is not a wonder anymore why distance education has become more popular nowadays. While a lot of people doubt the credibility and legitimacy of such schools or education, a lot of people who are into online classes are actually satisfied and a lot of them already are happy with the jobs which are related to the online course they have completed. Since it is non-conventional way of learning, I actually pretty much understand the doubts people have on it.

To stop you from those skepticisms, online or distance schools get their accreditation from land-based educational institutions and are guided by some rules.  So with this, you can find online schools accredited or tied-up with great universities like Stanford University and Kaplan.  The modules or curriculum are patterned that of what offline schools use.  So you make use of the same program plus you don’t have to give up on anything like your job or your family.

Online courses started from just 2-5 selections but now you can find a bunch of them that are related to your interest and dream job. Some Read more…

Pharmacy School Grants

September 1, 2011 – 6:54 am

Pharmacy school grants are often awarded to further innovation and research in pharmacology. Many private organizations and pharmaceutical companies are offering financial assistance to individuals, academic research projects, as well as contributions to this field. Students in the pharmacy programs can get their educational funding through minority college funds, financial aid programs that are school-based, and industrial associations. Divorced families may receive financial help by taking grants for single mothers. The guidelines vary from one financial aid program to another. The applicants can also be limited based on their career goal, academic achievement, or ethnicity. Before submitting the application forms applicants must review the requirements of each grant.

National Honor Society

August 28, 2011 – 2:57 pm

Tomorrow night I am getting inducted to the National Honor Society. It is a very prestigious program at my school. I have to be in the top ten percent of my class, participate in school activities, and have volunteer hours. This program is very important and it’s a huge honor to be accepted; I am so excited to be a part of it.
